Are Indians Independent?
A pertinent question, how far and to what extent are Indians happy on the celebrations of the 65th Independence Day? The most glaring and gnawing thought remains in the minds of people of India today that the leaders of our country are truly their mentors or they are minting money at the cost of hard-working youth and their parents’ earnings.
At the juncture of complete anarchy and deplorable political condition in India, there is a need of overhauling the Indian governance and overawing the corrupt hegemonic control. Why don’t we learn from our propounders of ‘Indian Struggle for Freedom Movement’ who could defeat the British Rule with a strong conviction for national cause.
We recall the day when the Constituent Assembly began to function as the Parliament of Independent India and Late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 14th August, 1947, addressed the Assembly outlining the tasks which were laid ahead for people of India to perform, such as ‘ending of poverty and inequality of opportunities’.
The Indians thereafter, became masters of their destiny and they started treading on the path of progress and overall growth and development in all sectors and sections of life and nation-building endeavour. But it was never dreamt by our core founders of ‘Struggle Movement’ that there would be a time when citizens of India will be at a cross-road for searching dedicated leaders and perplexed to feel any warmth of Independence.
Today, there is no dearth of so-called leaders but how far they help in nation-building can be gauged by their activities be it in the Parliament or State Assembly or Public gathering. The unearthing of scams and scandals has shocked the people of India to an extent that they have accepted the truth of their misfortune and dreams of new India dead in the water.
The pursuit of Mahatma Gandhi and J L Nehru for ‘ending of poverty’ failed at large but some politicians did take a full advantage of making themselves rich and richer without having an iota of nationalistic feeling and pain for the poor.
Truth, according to Gandhi, cannot be considered as an absolute term. It is relative to the person concerned. In Gandhi’s sense, truth is not just limited to only its literal meaning or to never tell a lie that it encompasses a broader dimension. In brief, truth involves being true to others as well as oneself but ‘being true’ means keeping one’s ideals, soul, and thought intact of any provocations in any circumstances. It further means walking on a path of honesty and fighting for one’s rights. It relates that one has to be true to the spirit of humanity. On contrary, the law-makers and politicians of today who happen to be quite educated have defiled the dignity and sanctity of the ruling system by telling lies after lies and made people of India poor and poorer.
What our forefathers and former leaders had thought and given a vision of developing nation, is now getting a distant dream for India as a great sense of dissatisfaction and disparity has been groping in the social, economic-political system and millions of people are struggling to survive in a society where soaring prices of goods and services have jeopardized their hope and labour.
