The recent gang rape of 30-year-old woman of Call Center employee from Mizoram hit the hornet nest of female’s ssfeguard in the national capital. Delhi has already earned disgrace for string of incidents of rape, molestation, and eve-teasing. Being the hub of swanky headquarters of private firms and MNCs, Delhi beckons aspiring girls, who want to become financially independent and dream to gyrate with the pace of their counterpart, for greener pasture. With thousands of girls heading for the Capital every year to make their dream true, Lutyen’s Delhi has become vulnerable and they become victim easily to the person having character of Mr Hyde.
The Dhaula Kuan rape incident once again underlines chink in the Capital’s armour viz-a-viz women’s security and lacuna in policing system. After the rape horror, the Delhi police floated directives regarding the safety of women staffers of BPO, corporate sector and media houses who provide pick and drop facility to their employees in the city. According to the order, companies have to maintain a database of all employees, drivers and security guards for access of information to the police when they required. Firms must hire drivers and guards from a licensed company. According to Delhi police it is the responsibility of the companies to make sure that a female employee should not travel alone in the cab. The company should choose a route so that no female employee is picked up first or dropped last. Companies not adhering to rules on security for women employees will be booked under Section 188 of IPC.
Albeit, this is unambiguously a welcome move, police should not shy away from shouldering their own responsibilities. Mere directing orders are not enough rather the police system should be sensitive and agile to ensure security round the clock. There are umpteenth reports about police inaccessibility and their slackness in face of urgency. Sluggish response of dialing 100, police patrolling in lackluster manner, showing Dabang attitude to the needy are rife. In Delhi and NCR, hosts of women employees are working in day and night shift. Cabs are ferrying them in wee hours. Biker gang, blade gang, Mirchi gang, Thak-Thak gang, and many wolves in sheep clothing are rampaging on the Delhi roads. The big question is—has Delhi police struck a serious note? Do they provide security cover to women staffers working in night shifts? If yes, why then hoodlums wreak havoc leaving Dhaula Kuan-like shocking incident repeatedly. Police should give a thought on this issue to make Delhi safer. Law enforcement agency has to act upon the directives of police act and it must ensure common citizen a fearless society. So be Robin Hood for Munnis otherwise khakhi badnam hogi.
