Tamil fraternity has openly expressed their displeasure over the holding of the 11th India International Film Academy (IIFA) awards in Sri Lanka in June this year. Since Amitabh Bachchan is the brand ambassador of IIFA, arrangements were also underway for a special screening of the Aishwarya Rai-Abhishek Bachchan starrer Raavan at the three-day event. But now the plan to show the bilingual film (in Hindi and Tamil) at IIFA has been cancelled.

The film’s director Mani Ratnam confirmed this on Monday at an event in Chennai.

However, Ratnam says the IIFA screening of ‘Raavan’ has been cancelled simply because the film is not yet complete. He’s also unwilling to comment on whether the stars of the film, namely Ash and Abhi will attend the IIFA weekend from June 3 to 5.

“The film is still not yet ready. We are still working on the background score of the film. The film will be ready till June. We are not going, the film is not going,” Mr. Ratnam said.

The Tamil community has asked for the boycott of IIFA this year as a sign of protest against the alleged massacre of Tamils in the military campaign carried out by the island nation to wipe out the LTTE last year.
