Availability of timely information is the key to success. Until recently, credible information on career and education was available to only a select few in big cities. Also, the information was available informally and in an unstructured manner. Information revolution ushered in an era of information overflow which in turn led to the need to sift useful information. In private schools, the presence of career counsellors who helped children make informed choice took care of the problem. The situation, however, changed little for children in rural areas and/or studying in government schools despite all efforts. In this scenario, the rise of internet raised hopes of closing the gap between the rich and the poor. Everyone could access information on career and personality development on the internet. Popularity of the internet could do wonders in the education sector. Also, whether we like it or not, the private sector will make inroads into the field of education. Hence, it is also expected to play a significant role in creating a knowledge-based society.

It is now widely accepted that the purpose of education is the all round development of an individual who can adapt to the changing world order and continues to grow. Personality development requires various and varied effort. Schools and colleges are no longer enough as institutes of learning. The need now is to use all forms of media that is used collectively to impart knowledge. The young generation has a keen interest in Internet which can be very useful in providing them with relevant information through this medium. All persons and organisations associated with education could effectively use internet for the benefit of education.
