An actor, director, script-writer, a sportsperson and an activist, all rolled into one, while speaking exclusively to Onlymyhealth.com, Rahul Bose spoke about his concept of healthy mind and healthy body.

On the latest fad of six pack abs

Q. What about six pack abs or eight for that matter?
Rahul Bose: I have six pack abs. But I do not show it. As a sportsperson, I use my body for my sports and not to flaunt or show off. My body is in a particular shape to serve the need of my sports and not for flaunting.

Q. What about these supplements in the market? Do you get that kind of retail therapy for your muscle building?
Rahul Bose: There is absolutely nothing wrong with protein supplements. If your body needs it, it is good for you. If you can spend that extra protein in your body effectively, then why not? But the point is you should be able to spend that acquired energy. If you are not healthy inside, you cannot look good outside. Nothing will help you. I can tell you that very few people would be able to exhaust their natural energy from the body to be able to take those extra supplements. Our body has tremendous natural resources which take many years to exhaust. What really matters is how those extra supplements will serve you. Your body needs to be healthy inside naturally first.

On his idea of being fit

Q. What fitness mantra do you follow?
Rahul Bose: I love sports. Yesterday I swam, and today I ran. Tomorrow I may do my cardio. When I am out for a shoot, I try do my yoga. When I can lay my hands on a those tennis rackets, I play tennis. I am doing some form of exercise or sports for at least five to six days in a week. It is not just for the sake of it. But it is for enjoyment. I enjoy sports. I also understand my body extremely well. 45 minutes of walk or rugby is essential for me. As far as diet is concerned, I follow a ‘Lion’s Diet’. There is no term as such but I call it a lion’s diet because I eat only when I am hungry and I eat only what my body craves. Your mind may crave for chocolates. But body may not. So I eat what my body craves and not my mind.
I also sleep very little. Everyone knows I sleep for less than five hours. But as long as you are happy with what you are doing and who you are, and you listen to your body needs, you will be close to being fit.

Q. Do you consider yourself fit?
Rahul Bose: Yes, I consider myself fit.

Q. You’re passionate about sports. Are you also a gym freak?
Rahul Bose: No, I am not a gym freak. I would not call myself that. I play sports. I play rugby and I play squash and I run. For ‘Shaurya’, I wanted to be fit but at the same time thin, so I hit the gym to do some light weights. But at the same time, if I am playing rugby, the sport requires me to be fit in a different way. So, I go to the gym for heavy weights. A gym can just serve the needs of the body. Sweating it out for hours in the gym together is not my type at all. A gym must be used according to your body need.
