Crime against Women on the Rise in India

When Valentine day is approaching fast and the Jagran Junction is talking about love and romance, one of the most barbaric and gruesome act took place not any where else but in our country India. A 23-year old woman employed in a mall was raped even when she jumped off the moving train to save her honor. The rapist sneaked into the ladies apartment of the train and started molesting her. What is shocking that the incident has taken place in the most literate (and civilized) state of India, Kerala. The incident didn’t take place around the midnight hours but at 8.30 pm when the victim was returning from her work.
Now the society has two options to deal with this kind of barbaric act. Either we should lock all the women behind the doors and drape them with that black cloth covering them from head to toe or we should file a police FIR and then start our snail-paced police investigation which will end at maximum a seven-year jail term for the rapist.
Or we should have a third option in place and that is draconian laws to deal with these inhuman acts. Why, when the Indian government can bring in laws like POTA or TADA to deal with terrorism then why should not we follow the same in case of this rarest of rare Rape. A country who can’t protect its women is a country worse than even Afghanistan or Congo. In the name of protecting honor where women are killed in Haryana then why the same people fails to protect the same honor in Kerala? Are we the nation happy enough to watch senseless cricket matches and living in a kind of illusory feeling that India is great!
It’s time now to act and not for the union government of India or the state governments or the police or the judiciary but for the Indian masses and the public.
