150 Crores in 10 Days, So what?

Over 150 Crores in 10 Days .. that was the advertisement today in the newspaper for My Name is Khan.   If you remember -3 IDIOTS – raked in 240 Crores in 10 days.   My first thought was – what does all of this mean to the common movie goer?   Is it to imply that if a movie is a big grosser that in itself is the reason for a person to watch the movie?     There was no language in the advert about how good the movie is, the critic ratings or the audience ratings .. just the amount of money it has grossed.  

The war between AMIR KHAN and SHARUKH KHAN – has taken a new turn in terms of whose movie is the biggest grosser at the box office.   Even I have gotten caught up in this fanatical race – and have a bet going on which movie will collect more monies from the box office:   My Name is Khan or 3 IDIOTS.    My bet is on 3 IDIOTS, but lets see, as I am in grave danger of losing.     

 If you read the critics reviews for My Name is Khan – many of them gave it rave reviews and 5 stars – setting up huge expectations from the movie goers.  The reader reviews gave the film a more mediocre review and mainly in the range of  3.5 stars.   There is a huge discrepancy between the critics and readers for this movie.  And my vote would be with the readers – that the film was a little bit better than average.  Nothing extra-ordinary.  Not that I don’t love Sharukh Khan but the movie was OK.  And this was roughly the view of 14 or so odd people that I watched the movie with.  The younger kids got so bored that they wanted to leave in the middle of the movie .  It definitely did not grab their attention.    Even my facebook account was flooded with negative comments regarding the movie. 

But now 3 IDIOTS – both critics and movie goers alike loved the movie.  The average rating from both was above 4, but more importantly everyone that I spoke to loved the movie.  And that is what is important – the word of mouth that keeps the movie going.   Now lets see  if I will win this bet,  and the better movie, 3 IDIOTS atleast in my view, will win!
