Today I am attending FICCI Frames in Mumbai.  And to my glee, the speakers of the opening ceremony are .. drum rolls please .. Sharukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Karan Johar.    And to boot – I have front row seats so I can see them all up close.

I must say that when Katrina walked in – all you can say is wow.  She looks exactly like she does in her movies.  In her off-white churidar salwar she is stunning.   It is hard to take your eyes off her.  It is currently only 10:00 am in the morning – and we are in New Bombay – so either she wakes up looking beautiful or she must have been up at 6:00 am.  But all in all, Katrina is mesmerizing.

Sharukh, now what can one say about King Khan … expect that maybe he was having a tough time keeping his eyes open to which he candidly acknowledged.    His speech funny, witty and clever.    There were two memorable lines from his speech:

  • “Sensexy India”:  meaning that India is doing well, and we are upwardly mobile.  After Roti, Cupdha and Makaan – what does one need.  Entertainment is the 4th most essential thing – and right now that stands at Movie Entertainment.  Sharukh expects that Sports Entertainment will follow soon.

  • “From Mumbai to Melrose”.  He would have preferred from Bombay to Beverly Hill, but does not wish to create any more controversy.  Ha Ha.    In terms of what the Indian industry can learn from Bollywood – there are three pillars

  • Screen Plays
  • Technology (VFX, Etc.)
  • Discipline and Organization

“But to be clear there is no such thing as a Cross Over Film” .. as per the KHAN himself  and “the Bollywood 3 hour film format just aint crossing over to Hollywood”.  As Khan put it – maybe it is time to define a new genre of films  – Drama Musicals

What was most disappointing about the opening ceremony – that none of the female stars including Katrina were asked to speak.  Not even two words on stage other than lighting the opening lamp.   On top of that there was the flip comments that aren’t they looking lovely.. ugghhh .. the industry is still so chauvinistic?   And did we really need  Katrina and her other female counterparts to be on the stage just to provide eye-candy to the audience?
