Today, Jagran is hosting a forum discussion on Democracy:  Challenges of Consensus Building.   I am sitting here at the Sangri-La Hotel at 9:30 AM eagerly awaiting what promises to be an enlightening event.    The event hosted by Jagran Foundation has some of the most emminent speakers in attendance including the Honorable Finance Minister –  Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Shri Nitish Kumar, Shri Arun Jaitley, Shri Bhupinder Hooda and many more esteemed politicians.

Our founding fathers choose to make India the world’s largest democracy.     The Jagran Forum aims at giving a platform to policy makers, analysts, the media and other stakeholders an opportunity to interact with a view and develop a common understanding on the way forward.   In this forum we will be listening to the views and the counterviews on this eminent panel on this issue.

Mahendra Mohan Gupta, Chairman of the Jagran Group, opened the forum and welcomed Shri Pranab Mukherjee.   An awe-inspiring figure.  A personality that requires no introduction.  But one that definitely is shed light on this issue.

Shri Pranab Mukherjee

Each of the leaders that have defined India have indentified one thing in common –  that  unity among adversity is the unique characteristic of India as a nation.   Consensus is the sole of the democratic system.  I believe in the philosophy and always try to build up consensus.  This solicits maximum share of opinions and comes thru with the most effective of solutions.

The consensus building is essential because it is inherent in the Indian society and works on mutual respect and tolerance.   Consensus building is an integral part to the nation building.   Consensus building is often misinterpreted.  It is the acceptance of difference,  understanding areas of agreement between the differences and agreeing on  the areas of convergence rather than divergence.  This will enable us to find new answers than they individually brought to the table, and trying to secure common solutions.

Institutions that are critical in  building up Consensus on crucial issues:

–          Planning Commission

–          National Development Council (made up all the chief ministers of the state)

–          National Integration Council

Awareness and informed citizens is a must.   Citizens have the right to know – access to information that he considers relevant to come to the relevant decision.  The right to information and the right to free and compulsory education are a must.

Pranabji
