Road Rage

Today, I think I received a big shock about life in Delhi.

Being from the US, we have always joked about Texas – and the hickville culture where everyone drives around with a gun and is trigger happy.  I have lived in Texas – and never witnessed such an incident.  However, yes – there are clear signs everywhere that GUNS are not allowed on the premises.  This was also true that these same signs were also all over the building of the campus where I worked.  So I guess that I was just lucky or plain ignorant.

But coming back to Delhi .. my colleague just informed me that he was in car accident.  The accident was no fault of his, as it was multiple car collision.   A situation in which one car brakes, the one behind it rams into it and so on.    It happens in a city where definitely CHAOS rules.   Well the fact that it doesn’t happen more often than not in Delhi, is in itself a miracle.  But what was the clincher, is that the one of the drivers gets out of his car with a BAT.  Yep, a BAT.    Why a BAT – to bash the other  driver – my colleague in this case.   I was perplexed that some one would be carrying a BAT in their car ..  and that there first reaction would be not to talk, discuss but to take out a BAT.  WOW,  now this is road rage at its worst.

There have been many cases road rage in Delhi accidents where minor accidents turn into incidents where drivers are physically assaulting one another.   Beating each other up.   Thank God, good sense prevailed in my colleague and he was able to calm down the clearly agitated driver with the bat or who knows what would have been the outcome.  The real question though in my mind is WHY SO MUCH AGGRESSION?   AND IS THIS A REALITY OF THIS CITY?   To my dismay, the answer is yes – with my colleague contemplating keeping a BAT for his defense and I am also considering the same.  Is this what I have come to in a city where it seems that the police always arrive a bit late or are never around when they are needed?
