So there is a lot of controversy in terms of how much various International brands are paying their factory workers in India. The brands that I am specifically referring to are GAP, NEXT and Marks & Spencer… these brands supposedly pay there workers a mere Rupees 20/hour, while the prescribed minimum in Rupees 30/ hour. Furthermore – these brands make their workers work 16 hour shifts. This would result in an average wage of Rupees 320/Day for a 16 hour day.
What was shocking to me is what I read in HT today where Suneet Verma claimed that he pays his workers Rupees 180/hour and Ritu Beri claimed that workers in her factory get Rupees 100 per hour. The amount Suneet Verma would pay would amount to Rs 1440 per day for an eight hour shift.. or 31000 per month. WOW ..
These figures sound astronomical and unbelievable to me .. since I work in the IT field and can hire HR, Programmers, Accountants, Translators, Marketing Analysts, etc – or what I would call white collar workers at less than these rates .. So would it be wiser for all these white collar workers to become factory workers?
Your thoughts please?
