Railway Reservation System – Status Notification for RAC / Waiting List

Information Technology has played very important role in eradicating the problems, the mankind were facing. IT has lot of scope in each and every walk of life. Indian Railway is one of the entities which has not utilised the maximum capability of Information Technology. Here is one more problem which can be eradicated with the help of technology.

Assumptions: –

1.)    Almost all passengers have access to mobile

2.)    Ticket Booking Officer should ask for mobile Number if passenger not getting confirmed ticket.

Requirements: –

1.)    Installation of one central “CSU – Current Status Update” or multiple CSUs at zonal level (have data of corresponding trains only).

Actual Status of RAC / Wait List passengers may not match due to various reasons: –

1.)    Actual Chart is prepared 2/4 hours in advance of leaving the train from source station.

2.)    There are chances of cancellation of reservation during this time (Someone missed the train or Change of plan of travelling).

CSU Update Database

This database will have data of RAC / Wait List passengers only. Table will be updated at the time of chart preparation.

Train NoPNR NoCurrent StatusDate Of Journey
214212345678RAC 124-MAR-2010
214212345679RAC 224-MAR-2010
214212345680RAC 324-MAR-2010
214212345681RAC 424-MAR-2010
214212345682RAC 524-MAR-2010

Rajendra Nagar Exp (2142) is scheduled to leave Rajendra Nagar (Bihar) at 10:45 for which final chart has been prepared at 08:45. Based on information after preparation of chart we have following status mentioned below: –

Train NoPNR NoCurrent StatusDate Of Journey
214212345650Confirm ( S10 – 40)24-MAR-2010
214212345651Confirm ( S7 – 21)24-MAR-2010
214212345652Confirm ( S11 – 25)24-MAR-2010
214212345678RAC 124-MAR-2010
214212345679RAC 224-MAR-2010
214212345680RAC 324-MAR-2010
214212345681RAC 424-MAR-2010
214212345682RAC 524-MAR-2010

After preparation of chart, two of the passengers (PNR – 12345650, 12345652) decided to cancel their journey and hence canceled their tickets at 9:10 & 9:50 which seems to be the positive news for first two RACs passengers but they are not aware about it.

As per new system, these two passengers should receive SMS stating – reservation is confirmed, “Please contact TTE”. Other should also receive the SMS which will update about current status (PNR – 12345680: – RAC 1) of their reservation.

So, Final status as per CSU becomes –

Train NoPNR NoCurrent StatusDate Of Journey
214212345678Confirm24-MAR-2010
214212345679Confirm24-MAR-2010
214212345680RAC 124-MAR-2010
214212345681RAC 224-MAR-2010
214212345682RAC 324-MAR-2010

Person receiving confirm status can approach the TTE and ask for his/her final seat and start his/her comfortable journey thereafter.

Adopting this methodology, Indian Railways will become more transparent in serving its customers and at the same time get rid of malpractices currently being followed.

One more assumption: – Initially, for sending SMS we will have maximum of 100 record per Train, considering the fact that not more than 100 passenger will cancel their ticket after preparation of Final Chart or miss the train.

There is still some problems left-

Someone missed the train during night or early morning but unable to cancel their tickets due to time constraint (8:00 – 20:00). In this case TTE becomes the major role player. If TTEs are equipped with handheld device which will have provision to update the status if someone does not turn up even after some time (let’s say 1 hour) from the start of his/her journey. A passenger missed his train at Patna Jn., then TTE should update (missed/ cancel) that confirm seat before train reaches to Buxar station. As soon as TTE update that seat, person in first waiting will receive the confirmation status and hence approach the TTE and ask for his seat.

  CSU

(Considering the fact that Passenger will cancel his / her reservation once misses the train on the same day if reservation counter is open or on next day.)

Also, Indian Railway has to conduct surprised check by reserving some tickets and later on not travelling by that train. Hence they can find out if TTEs are following the instructions in a right way or not.
